From May 18th to August 26th, 2026, the public will have the opportunity to enjoy, with free entrance and in state-of-the-art screening conditions, a rich and colorful program that combines classic masterpieces, contemporary works, and unique collaborations with cultural organizations and institutions.
The Festival commenced its screenings with the Greek premiere of the film “The Birthday Party” by Miguel-Ángel Jiménez, attended by the renowned American lead actor Willem Dafoe, the director, and the writer Panos Karnezis and on June 10th, in collaboration with the Athens Pride 2026 and to mark the tenth anniversary of his death, the city’s festival institution honored David Bowie with a screening of the legendary documentary "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" by D. A. Pennebaker in its complete, digitally restored version, in a spectacular screening held in the courtyard of the Zappeion Megaron and attended by 800 spectators.
The official opening of the festival, on June 18th, will be marked by a rare moment in cinema: Harvey Keitel, one of the most important actors in contemporary American cinema, will be at the Kolonos Theater to present Theodoros Angelopoulos’s “Ulysses’ Gaze”, in which he stars. Thirty years after Keitel’s first encounter with the insurmountable Greek director, the film’s return to Athens serves as a modest tribute to Angelopoulos’s greatest work.
The 16th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI is co-organized by the Culture, Sports, and Youth Organization of the City of Athens (OPANDA), while converting summer evenings into moments of art, imagination and light.
