For Quentin Tarantino, it is “the greatest achievement in the history of cinema,” “the best-directed film of all time,” and his favorite movie. As far as cinema history is concerned, the influence of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly on countless renowned filmmakers—the list is enormous—and on innumerable films that followed cannot be measured in words, but in unforgettable images.
For all of us, viewers from many different generations, the ultimate showdown between three gunslingers, with a hidden treasure as the coveted prize and the American Civil War as an explosive backdrop, remains a cinematic experience of unending pleasures: a triumph of direction; of the magical fusion of images with grandiose music; of bold and ingenious stylization in the service of a playful, twist-filled plot; of ecstatic spectacle as a window onto the human condition; of composer Ennio Morricone as an unofficial co-director and the sonic catalyst of this Western opera; and of the familiar conventions of an entire cinematic genre, reworked here and propelled before our eyes into the realm of myth.
