14ο AOAFF powered by ΔΕΗ: Highlights of an impressive festival summer!
The Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI, the beloved summer cinematic institution organized by the Athens International Film Festival and the Culture, Sports and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA), returned for the 14th year illuminating the Athenian summer nights with great cinema, already counting 20 sold out screenings.
Before bidding you farewell, we present to you some of the most exciting nights of this year's event, which has so far been one of the most successful in the Festival's history and has already welcomed its large audience with digitally restored prints, dazzling 4K editions and high quality audiovisual projections:
This year’s opening ceremony took place at the impressive Zappeion Hall, right in the heart of the city. The Athens Open Air Film Festival audience, devoted to our appointment, filled the majestic location and enjoyed the wonderful "HIGH FIDELITY" by Stephen Frears.
We waved goodbye to June for… “48 HOURS” below the Acropolis at Dionysiou Areopagitou street, enjoying the explosive chemistry of the great duo of Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, in Walter Hill's emblematic hit of the ‘80s.
Our cinematic journey continued at the magnificent Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens, with a ‘90s nostalgia weekend where thousands of spectators enjoyed two legendary films of the decade, Terry Gilliam's "12 MONKEYS" and Peter Weir's "THE TRUMAN SHOW".
Also, for the first time, we visited two of the most beautiful parks in the wider area of downtown Athens and had the pleasure to introduce them to our audience in the most vivid and cinematic way:
Drakopoulou Park at Ano Patissia, where we enjoyed once again on the big screen, Brian De Palma's "CARLITO’S WAY" featuring Al Pacino’s memorable performance.
And the historically important “Freedom Park” where, in collaboration with the Plein-Air Festival of the French Institute, we enjoyed along with 400 spectators Louis Bunuel's "THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY", on occasion of France's national holiday, celebrating half a century since the restoration of Democracy in Greece and 50 years since the first release of the Spanish filmmaker’s masterpiece.
Amidst the hot July, Athens Open Air Film Festival offered a rich and refreshing cinematic weekend with two back to back film nights, under the dazzling Full Moon.
On Saturday July 20, honoring the tradition of AOAFF at Plato’s Academy Park, we stayed up late together in an atmospheric horror night with three classic masterpieces: Charles Laughton's "THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER", Jack Clayton's "THE INNOCENTS" and Herk Harvey's "CARNIVAL OF SOULS", all in brand new restored copies. The beautiful park was filled until 3am with mats and loungers in an almost mystical atmosphere under the full moonlight.
On Sunday July 21, we traveled to the Stavros Niarchos Park, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, with an all-night event that lasted until dawn and attracted an incredible number of over 8.000 spectators!
Within the Full Moon Sleepover, we welcomed one of the most beloved animated tales ("ALADDIN"), an unexpected (and Oscar-winning) love story in “MOONSTRUCK”, one of the legendary horror and fantasy films of the ‘80s ("POLTERGEIST"), Kurt Russell plotting with John Carpenter a futuristic “ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK" and the since unsurpassed "THE WARRIORS", in a suspenseful all-night screening odyssey that culminated at the first light.
With a ticket to North Africa we arrived at the Rouf Train Station and were mesmerized by Bernardo Bertolucci's exquisite "THE SHELTERING SKY", along with the great leading duo of John Malkovich and Debra Winger, the spectacular cinematography of Oscar-winning Vittorio Storaro and the unforgettable music of Ryuichi Sakamoto in a perennially heartbreaking experience.
Finally, true to our intimate cooperation with the Plein - Air Festival of the French Institute of Greece, we hosted for yet another year classic films in the serene and cool gardens of the French Archaeological School.
We wish you happy holidays and we renew our appointment for August with the last three screenings of the 14th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI, before we hand over the baton to the 30th anniversary of the Athens International Film Festival!
Thanks to Fischer Beer for accompanying our movie nights in a delightful way.
