The 15th Athens Open Air Film Festival celebrates tonight the 40th anniversary of “Prizzi’s Honor” beneath the Acropolis
A major artistic and box office success, nominated for 8 Oscars (Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Jack Nicholson, Best Supporting Actress for Anjelica Huston — which she won — Best Supporting Actor for William Hickey, Editing, and Costume Design), one of the most bitingly dark comedies ever made celebrates its 40th anniversary tonight, thanks to the 15th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI. Free admission!
Charlie Partanna, the top enforcer of a powerful mafia family, carries out all their dirty work without ever violating their strict code — until he introduces his new wife to the family. He claims to be madly in love with her. She is stunning and mysterious. But what happens when it turns out she’s also a contract killer — working for a rival crime organization?
At the age of 79, and despite serious health issues, John Huston directs with the zest and energy of a young filmmaker, taking a traditional gangster film and transforming it into a wickedly entertaining and sardonically dark comedy. The script playfully twists the conventions of the genre, while the actors seem to compete over who enjoys their role the most.
Jack Nicholson, Kathleen Turner, and William Hickey deliver excellent performances, but it was Anjelica Huston who walked away with the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress — the only Academy Award the film won out of its eight nominations. After many years, we’ll have the chance to enjoy this film once again on the big screen, tonight, at a special screening hosted by the 15th Athens Open Air Film Festival powered by DEI.
“Prizzi’s Honor” will be shown in a stunning Athens location: on the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian walkway, at its junction with Parthenonos Street, with free admission. Start time: 21:30..
