FULL MOON SLEEPOVER - SCREENINGS

Aladdin
When:
 SUNDAY, JULY 21st | 21.00
Where: Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center | Free admission

A few years after Ariel's first swim in «The Little Mermaid», the awakening of animation's «sleeping beauty», Disney draws inspiration from « A Thousand and One Nights» to deliver an animated film of unimaginable innovation. Veteran directors John Musker and Ron Clements («The Little Mermaid», «Hercules») modernize the timeless legend of the kind-hearted «Aladdin», Alan Menken on music and Howard Ashman/Tim Rice on lyrics offer stunning Broadway scores that echo «a whole new world» and Robin Williams as Genie indelibly seals the film with a delirium of vocal performance and improvisational grandeur. Rub the lamp without fear, your wishes for a family film with unforgettable characters, a brilliant colour palette and endless humour have already come true. Panos Gkenas

The film will be played in its dubbed version (Greek).

Director: John Musker, Ron Clements | With the voices of: Christos Stasinopoulos, Katerina Giamali, Zano Danias, Nikos Pogkas, Spyros Bibilas | Runtime: 90' | Year of Production: 1992

Moonstruck
When:
 SUNDAY, JULY 21st | 22.40
Where: Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, 364 Andrea Syngrou Ave. | Free admission

From the very first moment you are «Moonstruck». A glow like that of the cinematic projector on the screen as it is reflected in enthralled faces. And it changes lives. Norman Jewison's film, primarily with the responsibility of a dense, thoroughly worked script (one of the film's three Oscars) on how love, all alone, defeats the thought of death, and immediately afterwards, with a casting inspiration, takes you instantly into its world. It also transports you to its film era. When the romantic comedy - in its last days but without knowing it – seemed quintessential cinema directing a world in that bubble, urging on another logic of everyday life, sensual, operatic, glorifying of its people. An «irrational» logic that loves without exception, that nurtures and makes sure (conveniently of course, this is the way of the genre) that everyone is happy with their choices. Cher was a revelation, Cage an ascension of his own, Olympia Dukakis the magnificent performance of the film and the soul of its beliefs. Untreated in the glow of the moon, nightwalking in a romantic mentality lost (if not captured), we'll be back on the canvas again ahead, perhaps not to become the heroes of a fantasy again but to confirm that the child will be the last to go. Incurable by the moonstruck, nightwalking into a romantic mentality lost (if not ridiculous), we will gather again in front of the screen, perhaps not to become again heroes of a fantasy but to confirm that the child will be the last to go. Ilias Dimopoulos

Director: Norman Jewison | Starring: Cher, Olympia Dukakis, Nicolas Cage, Vincent Gardenia, Danny Aiello, John Mahoney, Feodor Chaliapin | Runtime: 102' | Year of Production: 1987

Poltergeist
When:
 SUNDAY, JULY 21st | 00.20
Where: Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center | Free admission

A peaceful family is confronted with absolute terror when their home is haunted by demonic forces that first communicate with their innocent little daughter via television. But what seems like an odd and relatively fun game with the supernatural soon turns into a shocking journey to the other side and back again. The idyllic suburban reality of Steven Spielberg's (producer and screenwriter of the film) films had an unforgettable rendez-vous in 1982 with the painfully realistic horror cinema advocated by Tobe Hooper, director of «The Texas Chainsaw Massacre» and a chilling mocker of the unseen and most disturbing aspects of a grim America. And from this seemingly incongruous melding came one of the most successful films of the entire '80s: an instant classic of fantasy and horror, tremendously effective for its entire genre, that made spectacular use of effects components, shock tactics and a sense of the morbid in service of a nightmarish rollercoaster ride. Which worked perfectly as a pure spectacle, but at the same time suggested a sardonic allegory for the guiltily buried sins of an entire country that is about to rise literally from the grave. Loukas Katsikas

Director: Tobe Hooper | Starring: JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, Heather O’Rourke, Zelda Rubinstein, Dominique Dunne | Runtime: 114' | Year of Production: 1982 | Language: English | Subtitles: Greek

Escape from New York
When:
 SUNDAY, JULY 21st | 02.20
Where: Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center | Free admission

At the peak of his career, having a budget that is a joke by today's standards and an imaginative script that envisioned the New York of the future as a huge prison, whose number one inmate is the President of the United States himself, John Carpenter gave cinema one of the most enduringly beloved fantasy adventures, as well as one of the most popular anti-heroes: Snake Plissken, a rough-neck convict who, in order to secure his freedom, has a few (late-night) hours to infiltrate the impregnable fortress that has become Manhattan and rescue the President from the city's armies of thugs and criminals. Snake Plissken would have been unthinkable without Kurt Russell's outstanding performance, and so would every sci-fi film tragedy of the '80s that borrowed indiscriminately from that legendary «Escape» but never managed to surpass it. Perhaps because the secret behind the success of Carpenter's film was its ultimate humility: Its proud b-movie roots and sensibilities, the meager cost that persuaded those who worked for it to become even more inventive, the enviable directing savings and, of course, the philosophy that determined Carpenter throughout his whole career: quality over quantity. Loukas Katsikas

Director: John Carpenter | Starring: Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Adrienne Barbeau | Runtime: 99' | Year of Production: 1981 | Language: English | Subtitles: Greek

The Warriors
When:
 SUNDAY, JULY 21st | 04.10
Where: Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center | Free admission

The overnight odyssey of a young gang falsely accused of a crime they didn't commit, and now desperately seeking a way back to their safe territory, forms the basis of this thrilling and illustratingly stunning night journey to the edge of the big city. Taking the action as far away from the realistic as he can, Walter Hill builds a fancy film world where colors become vivid and intoxicating, violence is represented with an infallible choreographic perfection, New York City is transformed into a modern jungle full of modern tribes, and scenes alternate in comic book logic. The result was a dazzling film that justifiably caused a sensation in its time and seems not to have aged a day, regardless of the fact that it is based on one of the oldest texts ever written: the «Anavasis» by Xenophon! Loukas Katsikas

Director: Walter Hill | Starring: Michael Beck, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, James Remar | Runtime: 92' | Year of Production: 1979 | Language: English | Subtitles: Greek
