A loyal hitman for a powerful Mafia clan, Charley Partanna has never once defied the family’s code—until he introduces them to his new bride: a contract killer working for a rival criminal organization.
At the age of 79, and in frail health, John Huston directed this film with the vigor and appetite of a young filmmaker, turning a classic gangster tale into a wildly entertaining and deliciously sardonic black comedy. The screenplay gleefully subverts genre conventions, while the cast seems to be in a gleeful contest over who’s having more fun embodying their role.
Jack Nicholson, Kathleen Turner, and William Hickey deliver stellar performances, but it was Anjelica Huston who walked away with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress—the film’s only Oscar win from a total of eight nominations. Prizzi’s Honor remains one of the finest and sharpest films of the 1980s. Loukas Katsikas
