Having examined through his filmography the relationship between Man and Nature, but also the conflict with his own nature, celebrated director Peter Weir perceived in Andrew Niccol's dystopian screenplay the possibility to develop his argument by focusing on the relationship between Man and his natural Creator. By radically changing the tone of the script, as well as much of it, Weir transcended the obvious satire of the world of entertainment and the then-emerging reality television and delivered a wonderful allegory in which Man takes on the Creator - played by a figuratively and literally divine Ed Harris - claims the benefit of free will and rightfully gets it. He also spotted «man-next-door» qualities in the most popular up-and-coming representative of physical comedy, Jim Carey, allowing him to reintroduce himself to us as a worthy Jimmy Stewart substitute - a side of him we would like to see on screen more often. Perhaps one of ten best films of the ‘90s. Giannis Basileiou
