A peaceful family is confronted with absolute terror when their home is haunted by demonic forces that first communicate with their innocent little daughter via television. But what seems like an odd and relatively fun game with the supernatural soon turns into a shocking journey to the other side and back again. The idyllic suburban reality of Steven Spielberg's (producer and screenwriter of the film) films had an unforgettable rendez-vous in 1982 with the painfully realistic horror cinema advocated by Tobe Hooper, director of «The Texas Chainsaw Massacre» and a chilling mocker of the unseen and most disturbing aspects of a grim America. And from this seemingly incongruous melding came one of the most successful films of the entire '80s: an instant classic of fantasy and horror, tremendously effective for its entire genre, that made spectacular use of effects components, shock tactics and a sense of the morbid in service of a nightmarish rollercoaster ride. Which worked perfectly as a pure spectacle, but at the same time suggested a sardonic allegory for the guiltily buried sins of an entire country that is about to rise literally from the grave.
