In 1975, Oscar-winning Robert Enrico returns to one of France's martyrdom villages to tell an archetypal tale of revenge. It stars Philippe Noiret, who plays a seemingly orderly surgeon at the ending of World War II. A man who, at the sound of the ultimate German brutality, will pick up his old rifle to face a military unit of Nazis alone. Staged on an obsessive exploration of an extreme psychological condition, «The Old Gun» articulates its own «an eye for an eye» towards memories that 30 years after the end of the war were not erased. The result is one of the most mysterious films French cinema has generated about the German occupation. A bloodshed ballad that culminates in a castle. A monument, in this case of an atrocity, that externalizes all that which, according to the common memory, remained hidden in the dark corridors and catacombs of history. The film is undoubtedly a product of its time. The one that could fit into the same reels a melodramatic character study with over-the-top action and the pure moralism with explosions of violence. The same one who gave birth to «Death Wish» and «Dirty Harry». Finally, an era that rewarded films like «The Old Gun» with the 1976 César, the first ever Best Picture César, therefore ensuring it a place in eternity. Thodoris Karamanolis
