Unfairly in the shadow of «Scarface», Brian De Palma's film does not coincidentally share the same leading actor, and in the role of a Latino gangster. In «Carlito's Way» you feel that the ghost of Tony Montana has returned to Earth remorseful, better and wiser, looking for a chance to redeem himself. But as uncle Clint has taught us, there are no second chances in this world and Heaven is always a few feet away, so much that if you raised your hands, you could feel it with your fingers. Apart from De Palma's usual virtuosity in directing, which again gives us scenes of anthologies, such as the chase in the Grand Central train station, here there is also a creeping melancholy that finds both its foundation and its climax in an unbearable conclusion that brings the hero between farewell and nowhere and gives the director's «impure» filmography its pure masterpiece.
