The young dancer Scott Hastings trains from a young age in ballroom dances, something that is a family tradition. Being faithful to a totally unique personal style, he does his best to win the big prize in the national competition. When the federation in charge cancels his participation because he does not strictly abide to the rules and the technique required by the ballroom’s competition nature, Scott will find a way to claim the position he deserves.
Baz Luhrmann’s first film «step», the euphoric «Strictly Ballroom» launches the «Red Curtain» Trilogy which was completed with «Romeo + Juliet» (1996) and «Moulin Rouge!» (2001). A director who loves music, grand spectacle and who functions without guilt towards the pop culture’s bliss and film melodrama, Luhrmann delivers in his cinema debut an indulging dance lesson. A lesson that breaks the rules because it follows the heart’s rhythms, the colors’ intensity, the emotions’ movements and which (of course!) does not know of restraint. Panos Gkenas
