Loaded with autobiographical elements from the period when the later-to-be super star singer was trying to set into course his career by strolling around the musical scenes of his birthplace in Minneapolis, «Purple Rain» unites the plain melodrama and the usual conventions of a musical drama with Prince’s charismatic persona and with the magnificent soundtrack that came along with the film.
Despite it being a cosmetic monument of the decade that gave birth to it while also being a milestone in the history of modern pop culture, Prince’s film debut had to fight with Warner Bros’s objections. The enterprise officials had a hard time accepting the artist as an actor only to be loudly refuted by the film’s emergence into one of the 80’s biggest commercial creations and the inheritance of one of the top albums of all times that was left.
