During the 16th century a Spanish garrison leaves the mountains of Peru and sinks into the Amazon jungle searching for the mythical golden city of El Dorado.
Their chief, a ruthless and megalomaniac commander, leaves his men to collapse in the insanity and after declaring himself as the sovereign he leads his men gradually to extinction.
Through «Aguirre», his absolute masterpiece, Herzog reached very close to the ideal of an ecstatic and transcendental cinema. From the unforgettable opening scene right to the breathtaking finale, from the sublime illustration and Klaus Kinski’s maniac presence to the adventurous filming that endangered everyone’s lives, Herzog signed a directorial achievement of incredible power that reminds in ambition and psychotic grandeur the central hero himself.
