A dapper gentleman enters an apartment in Veracruz, Mexico, holding a gun with a silencer and murders his unsuspecting victim. He then walks steadily towards the square.

A group of Arabs, dressed as Israelis, plant a bomb in Jerusalem and return to their lair. Surrounded by the army, only one of them manages to get out alive.

In Paris, a businessman is accused of stock market fraud. When his associate kills himself in front of his very eyes, he abandons his wife and leaves France.

An Irish gang in New Jersey robs a rival church and escapes in a van after shooting the minister.

A violent dispute breaks out in their midst, resulting in a terrible accident where they all meet their end, except for the driver, who will now have to face the wrath of the rival gang on his own.

These four stories are merely the interlude to the William Friedkin's 1977 masterpiece, a film that might have flopped at the box office but is now cited as "The Exorcist" director's greatest achievement. Which is not unjustified, considering the American auteur builds an atmosphere of mounting tension, as he zeroes in on the human traits that develop under extreme circumstances, masterfully combining the simplicity of cinema verite with the craft of Hollywood action movies.
