In its 6th edition this year, Athens’ biggest film celebration returns! More than 20 screenings in the town’s most beautiful spots, from June until September, with free entrance!
If you find yourselves in Athens from June until September and you meet an outdoor «cinema», in the most unusual place in town, don’t wonder! The Athens Open Air Film Festival, the summer indulgence, which has now become an institution in town, faithful to its rendez-vous again this summer will be realized for the 6th consecutive year.
Especially for its sixth edition, the 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival poster was created by the graphic designer - illustrator Vassilis Mexis.
Born in 1991 in Marousi, Vassilis began getting his first distinctions at the age of 7 in painting contests. Having graduated with honors from the AKTO school of art with studies in Graphic Design (BA - Bachelor of Arts, with 1st Class Honors), he has been working in the field of advertising since 2012, and since 2014 he is a member of the Bold Ogilvy & Mather group as an Art Director. His collaboration with his team has brought distinctions like the Hermes and Young Lions awards. His work has been published in magazines and sites. Six of his visual portraits are displayed on the walls of the NIRVANA cinema, while he is also the artist behind the covers of magazines with big circulation.
The 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival poster in the words of Vassilis Mexis:
«If there were three words to describe the Athens Open Air Film Festival, these would be Athens, cinema, summer. The poster’s visual concept was generated by these three notions.
The two first words became one, through the unification of a symbol of Athens and a symbol of cinema. The goddess Athena and the «goddess» of cinema Marilyn Monroe are met in an attractive, but controversial figure which harmoniously unites the classic with the modern.
The summer is diffused in the poster’s visual with the help of the free street style typography and of colors. The golden rays of the summer sunset give Athens a magical ambiance, making each AOAFF screening unique.
The figure, having its back to the sunset lighting, leaves the day behind and welcomes the night, lit by a cold sky blue light which suggests the start of the AOAFF screening. Enjoy the films!»

Its program is going to include more than 20 selected screenings in Athens’ most beautiful neighborhoods, giving to the town the cinema glow it deserves.
Legendary musicals, spaghetti westerns, acclaimed dramas, award winning masterpieces, scientific fiction and horror films, Greek films that are worth watching and unknown cinema masterworks accompanied by live music!
From June to September, with the kind support of the GNTO for the 4th consecutive year, special places in Athens, archeological sites, parks, squares, and a few of the most beautiful Museums in town, are turned into outdoor «open air cinemas», with free entrance for the audience.
From the Festival’s selected locations, there could not be missing few of the best open-air cinemas of Athens, while the collaboration that the Festival launched last year with the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, is consolidated this year with the screening of three films, in the 260 Peiraios garden.
Co-organizer, for the second time, of the greatest outdoor film fest of the town is the City of Athens Cultural, Sport and Youth Organization, which keeps strengthening this summer institution.
In this big film celebration Fischer beer also participates. Fischer is the beer that loves good cinema and ideally complements the special moments of the 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival, delightfully refreshing and buying the Festival’s audience a drink.
The entrance is free to all screenings which are organized with the kind support of the GNTO & www.visitgreece.gr .

The Athens Open Air Film Festival was launched in the summer of 2011, and organized outdoor film screenings and other cultural events, in the most distinctive monuments in Attica and unexpected places, which reveal the urban landscape such squares, parks and Pedestrian Precinct, as well as in some of the «historical» open air cinemas in town.
The festival in numbers:
