Premiere: We painted Avdi Square...purple!

The 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival began with an impressive evening dedicated to music, in Avdi square, which was dressed up in the film’s colors!

The 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival began its screenings on Tuesday, June 21st, the European Music Day, in Avdi square, one of the Festival audience’s favorite locations. All the Festival’s screenings are realized with the kind support of the GNTO for the 4th consecutive year. Co-organizer of this great outdoor town film festival is the City of Athens Cultural, Sport and Youth Organization, which continues to strengthen this summer institution.

This year the Athens Open Air Film Festival began with an event of musical character that covered a wide range of musical choices combined of course with the magical world of cinema.

The evening opened with the melodies of the 70-membered City of Athens Symphony Orchestra, which under the direction of Eleftherios Kalkanis, introduced the Avdi square visitors to the fascinating universe of world cinema, with grand cinema scores from classic films and musicals.

The City of Athens Big Band Orchestra followed with 17 musicians under the direction of Manos Theodosakis, who especially for this evening “went to the Movies” with popular music scores from beloved films, from the very characteristic Pink Panther theme to James Bond’s music.

In this lovely summer evening beautifully decorated by the June full moon, which also coincided with the summer solstice, a huge crowd of all ages attended. Among them were also town-visitors and tourists who were impressed by the purple-font event, as the «magician of colors and sound» Thodoris Vasilopoulos, of Art of Sound, took care of dressing up the square in the film color in order to make the Purple Rain screening a really special experience.

The film screening was introduced by Christos Tentomas, president of the City of Athens Cultural, Sport and Youth Organization, who stressed out the importance and the goal that is achieved six years now by the Athens Open Air Film Festival, to reveal forgotten or unknown locations in Athens, by giving them a fresh glow and color.

Also, the new Artistic Director of the Festival, Loukas Katsikas, came on stage to thank the GNTO which supports the 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival, as well as the City of Athens Cultural, Sport and Youth Organization, which remains a substantial ally in the Festival’s work. He continued by saying that the coincidence of the European Music Day with the heat wave that does not seem to subside for the past few days in the city, seemed like the ideal opportunity to poor down some Purple Rain, a film which as he pointed out decisively introduced a charismatic artist to the wide audience and offered one of the most compelling soundtracks in the history of music and cinema. The crowd warmly greeted Loukas Katsikas in his first public appearance as the Festival’s Artistic Director and strongly applauded at the end of the film.

Prince’s pop genius, who died exactly two months before the screening, revived on the screen of the 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival and touched many of the viewers. After the end of the film the audience was invited at the «Blue Parrot» bar across the road, with a guilt-free pop dj set from Andreas Kirkos of avopolis.gr and free Fischer beer!

The screenings of the 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival are realized with the kind support of the GNTO & www.visitgreece.gr, and are co-organized with the City of Athens Cultural, Sport and Youth Organization, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture & Sports.
