Lear’s descent into the inescapable realm of madness, as he witnesses his empire’s collapse, begins from the absurd claim to distribute his wealth to his three daughters on the basis of who will state her love in the most resounding way.
Brooks’ version of «King Lear» had at the time divided the critics, before gradually gaining a prominent place in the long list of Shakespearean adaptations on the silver screen. Paul Scofield, a legend of the British theatre and awarded with an Oscar for his performance in «A Man for All Seasons», excels in this role.
