The 3rd Athens Open Air Film Festival, with the support of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and the Greek Film Center, is expanding its geographic horizons towards the northern suburbs, issuing an invitation to spend a refreshing evening at the leafy October 28th Square at Nea Erithrea. This Sunday, July 18 at 21:00, we’ll be taking a trip down memory lane with Nikos Papatakis’ 1986 masterpiece "The Photograph".
This summer, the festival will be taking you on a guided tour of the most unforgettable moments in Greek Cinema, a journey full of nostalgia and unexpected discoveries.
The movie: Contrary to “A Foolish Love”, where Yorgos Panousopoulos offers an inside look of urban Athenian lifestyle, Ethiopian-born Nikos Papatakis depicts the darkness that prevailed over his homeland during the junta years, filtered through nostalgia and the pain of immigration.
"The Photograph" is the story of Ilias, played by Aris Retsos, a young man from Kastoria, who decides to start fresh in Paris, struggling under the weight of his family’s left-wing past. His only connection to this new country is Gerasimos, a distant relative of his mother’s, and his only possession is the photograph of a stranger, who he introduces as his sister. This seemingly innocent lie triggers a series of dramatic events.
Papatakis’ next-to-last film has become part of the Greek movie pantheon and despite the fact most of it actually takes place in Paris, it is considered one of the most insightful on-screen takes on the history of modern Greece.
