The 3rd Athens Open Air Film Festival, with the support of the US Embassy in Athens, is proud to present a series of thematic evenings on the phenomenon of human trafficking. The series will kick off on July 3rd with the screening of «Eden» by Megan Griffiths at Avdi Square in Metaxourgio. Human trafficking is a term used to describe the activities involved when someone obtains or holds a person in forced service. It is estimated there are 20-30 million people in slavery today, including children.
The film: The real-life story of a second generation Asian-American kidnapped by sex traffickers and held captive for three years. Up-and-comer Megan Griffiths explores the psyche of an innocent victim in a devastating piece of reality-based filmmaking that avoids emotional outbursts in favor of exploring the moral ambiguity that governs her every chance at survival.
Constrained within the confines of a man-made purgatory, Griffiths somehow manages to capture immaculate frames of human perversion, as the title character braves the storm in the hopes of salvation. Jamie Chung plays Eden, a young woman who’s forced to reinvent a new, hard-core version of her former self in order to survive.
Choosing to explore this particular theme, the Festival highlights the need for community outreach on the part of the film industry and the importance of raising awareness of little-known problems, especially in times of crisis.
The screening is organized with the kind support of the US Embassy in Athens
