The 3rd Athens Open Air Film Festival, with the kind support of the Greek National Tourism Organisation, was once more vibrantly present in the centre of the town last night, with the screening of the film “Eden” at the crowded Avdi square. Local residents, restless cinema fans, passers-by and young city people gathered around the square to watch Megan Griffiths’ bold and honest glance onto the phenomenon of human trafficking.
The film was screened with the kind support of the U.S. Embassy in Athens in the context of a section dedicated to the subject of human trafficking, while Fischer offered plenty of cold and free beer to the audience.
Human trafficking consists today the third most profitable illegal and criminal business operation - on a global scale - after drug trafficking and the illegal trade of arms. Its victims, mostly women and children, are estimated to be more than 2,5 million annually. They are forced to live and work under unspeakable and inhumane circumstances and suffer from constant abuse, both physical and psychological. By choosing this topic the Festival and the U.S. Embassy in Athens underline the social role that the cinema carries and stress the importance of highlighting such concerns, especially in crucial times.
Our cinema-dedicated summer continues onto a July full of screenings under the stars.
