The sun rises and the '90s Disney renaissance reveals, through the perpetual "Circle of Life", its absolute pinnacle. Released in 1994, "The Lion King" successfully claimed its crown and over the years became more than a classic, becoming a "king" in the hearts of young and older alike who discovered through the "Hamlet" of the savannah a colorful tale of self-discovery.

Although the studio at the time had poured its heavy artillery into the production of the upcoming, ambitious "Pocahontas" (1995), it was Simba's adventures that ultimately proved its potential. The emblematic introduction with Lebo M's vocals and the beautiful African landscapes, Jeremy Irons' Machiavellian performance and the vivid supporting characters, the spectacular rampaging wildebeest sequence and Mufasa's heartbreaking demise, the "Be Prepared" with its direct reference to Leni Riefenstahl's propaganda footage and Simba's final triumph (of will) all serve the film in the most admirable way. In addition, Sir Elton John's pop melodies, the legendary Tim Rice's insightful verses and Hans Zimmer's lyrical mark follow in the footsteps of "The King" by offering some of the most well-written songs and glorious music of the Disney tradition (all three justifiably won Oscars for Score and Song).

Nearly thirty years after its coronation, the Shakespearean Lion King remains entertaining and funny, adventurous and moving with a clear timeless message: in Disney's backyard, the story of little Simba will forever be its Proud Rock. Hear him roar again. Panos Gkenas
