In the 80s the American dream has a very specific format. The family happily resides in its picture-perfect home with the television - this glorious technological wonder and must-have item - at its core while the country’s past is nicely burried away. Literally! In “Poltergeist” the American dream will be overturned by the sweet and innocent face of Carol Anne, the family’s youngest child who is able to communicate with spirits through the television. What starts out as a fun and harmless game soon becomes a terrifying journey to the other side. The television is rendered a gate through which the family will be invaded and tried while well-hidden secrets will emerge flooding the complacent middle class conscience.

Long before “Ringu” turned television into a window to terror, the legendary “Poltergeist” shocked with its ingenious ideas and defined the American nightmare while steadily maintaining its phantasmagoric elements. Though Tobe Hooper (“Texas Chainsaw Massacre”) is credited as director, in reality the film is the creation of Stephen Spielberg who produced and wrote the script (it was filmed at the same time as “E.T.”). “Poltergeist” has been terrorising audiences for decades with great ease and has become a cult classic. Panos Gkenas
